April in Hampshire is when the county bursts into bloom, draping itself in gentle pink petals, soft sunshine, and the heady scent of spring flowers. It’s a month that feels like a deep exhale, a joyful letting-go of winter.
Cherry blossoms line Winchester’s back streets like pastel confetti suspended in the air. Abbey Gardens is brought to life by the Judas and Handkerchief tree blossoms, the petals fluttering to the ground like down like tiny seasonal spells.
The River Itchen hums with life, ducklings bobbing behind their mothers, trout glinting beneath the rippling surface.
In the New Forest, foals make their adorable entrance, wobbling beside their mothers, legs impossibly long. Towards the end of the month Bluebells begin to unfurl in hidden patches, waiting for May to arrive so they can carpet the forest floor with deep-violet magic.
Drip, drip, drop, little April showers. Rain becomes restorative, ushering fresh growth in abundance. April showers come and go like playful visitors, leaving everything bright and gleaming.
This is the perfect month for long walks in Mottisfont’s gardens, the old rail line in Meon Valley, or along the South Downs Way where fresh greenery rolls across the Hampshire hangers.
Big love,
Bex
